Nominations for the 39th annual American Music Awards were announced today, with Adele taking the lead with a total of four nominations.
Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, and Rihanna are right at her heels having each received three nominations. Surprisingly, pop superstars Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have also received just three nominations each. “Roman’s Revenge” singer Nicki Minaj was on hand with Pitbull in Los Angeles to make the announcement. Adele was nominated for awards in the categories of Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, and Artist of the year. She also received an Album of the Year for her latest release, ’21.’
Despite having only received three nominations, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Lil Wayne are all in the running against Adele for the coveted Artist of the Year award. Beyonce only received two award nominations this year, as well as Kanye West, Pitbull, and Nicki Minaj. Other acts up for awards at this year’s AMAs include LMFAO, Chris Brown, and Bruno Mars.
The nominees are chosen using numbers received from the music charts. Adele’s extreme popularity and high number of record sales in the US landed her in the running for the awards. Her latest album has sold nearly 4M copies in the US alone.
