
U2, known for humanitarian efforts in addition to their great music, decided to pay a special tribute to former South African President Nelson Mandela during a July 14 show. The performance took place at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
According to The New York Post, the group led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” and they affectionately referred to Mandela by his clan nickname, Madiba. Actor Morgan Freeman, who portrayed Mandela on the big screen, hosted a celebratory lunch in on July 18, Mandela’s birthday where a video of the performance was played. Freeman was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal on Mandela in ‘Invictus.’ It was Mandelas 93rd birthday.
U2 have enjoyed a career that has spanned across 4 decades. They are best known for their epic album “The Joshua Tree” which contained such hits as “Bullet the Blue Sky,” “Red Hill Mining Town,” “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and “With or Without You.” They are also known for their songs “Sweetest Thing,” “Beautiful Day,” and “The Saints Are Coming.”
The group is currently wrapping up their 360 tour which has been the most successful music tour in history, having grossed more than $ 700M.
