Weekend Movie Preview: July 29, 2011

It’s all about variety in this weekend’s movie preview.  Four movies come out that should appeal to all demographics.  One is genre-mashup, featuring two very different types of characters; another follows a group of little blue childhood characters running around NYC; a love-story about unconventional (or crazy) relationships; and finally a true-story about a sadistic son.

Cowboys and Aliens will probably lead the box office this weekend, bringing in at least $ 40 million, up against some large competition from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger.

The Smurfs is also expected to do well attracting both young kids and the older ones who knew the show from childhood.  It should bring in upwards of $ 30 million.

The romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, starring an all-star cast also hits this weekend.  Against some tough competition, it might make the top 5, bringing in approximately $ 20 million.

Cowboys and Aliens: Two genres come together in an epic battle between cowboys and aliens.  Set in the wild west, aliens descend on a small town in the desert to the surprise of the residents.  They must band together to save their town and their people from the deadly attacks.

The Smurfs: The Smurfs have been chased out of their village by an evil wizard and end up in the middle of Central Park in NYC.  They meet some human friends as they try to get back to their village before the wizard finds them.

Crazy, Stupid, Love: Cal Weaver thinks he has it all – great wife, awesome job, good kids – until his wife tells him she’s cheating and wants a divorce.  Heartbroken, Cal winds up in a bar where he meets Jacob, a playboy who offers to show him the ways of the single world.  Jacob finds himself in his own trouble when he falls for Hannah, a pre-law student who doesn’t fall for his moves.
